flashbacks

You know wehn you think of one song and how it makes you think of another song, but you normally wouldn't even think of that other song at all except through the tangent of the first song? Well that's what happened yesterday. SO I was with Mom in the car and on 92.9 they played this song by NEw Radicals called "You Get What you Give." I've liked that song since it came out in like 6th grade for me. Of course, that was also when I was in my mainstream pop music phase, and also when I noted that I was my most uneasiest (if that's a word). Coincidence? Anyway, it reminded me of this other song that I liked at the same time, and hadn't even thought about for at least a few years. I found the song "Got You (where I Want YOu)" by The Flys just a while ago online, and now I'm wondering why I liked it so much. I mean, it was alright and kinda childish lyrically, but I think it was just the perceived artisticness of the video that had me mesmerized back then. Now, it's ok, and I wouldn't mind listening to it, but I think its just kinda funny how our perceptions of the past are brighter and better than they necessarily were. Take UHS, for example. Now we're at the point where we can appreciate all the effort that we went thorugh for our own rewards and how it's made us better people. Back then, though, we're just like this sucks, I hate it, maybe I should transfer to Rincon, no more freaking notes etc. I think that's weird and cool at the same time, so maybe a Psych minor wouldn't be a bad thing. Mom jokes about Psychology students in general that they;re only taking classes to understand other people so they can understand themselves. And frankly, she's got a point.

On an enturely different matter, have any of you heard of the group Seether? Is it just me, or does the lead singer seem very Cobain-esque? I mean, he kinda looks like Cobain a bit, but I think it's more in the intonations in his voice. Anyway, check out their single "Remedy" cuz its pretty good.

The waiting continues

And mom found a gray hair on my chin

freaking out

As I've been going through all the trash of my room, I've had the constant fear that I would lose something of actual importance among all the piles of recyclables. And now I fear I've lost my Sparky. He's been there at my side since 8th grade and through all of high school. Through thick and thin he's helped me become the successful, arguably brainy student that I am. (sob) I can still remember how your little STAT button would always stick. Oh God, what have I done? Where are you? Sparky, please come back home! That other one I have means nothing to me! It is you who I've always turned to. And I got you at CostCo for only 87 bucks! Sure I might've been lustful at those newer, sleeker, faster ones, but that means nothing to the times we shared together. I miss you, Sparky.

Chinese Cotton

Happy anniversary, my dear blog! The times we've shared, the tears we've cried, the joys of victories and the agonies of defeats. I love you, my dear bloggie! So our so called honeymoon is over- big whoop. We can stil celebrate, though maybe now you can do my laundry.

the memories. Oh god, the memories.

So I'm still in the process of cleaning my room. yes, still. Well, as evidenced by the fact that I still had my 7th grade pre-pre algebra worksheets, I am a very bad packrat. SO now I've been scrounging thorugh my closet, which has had boxes of stufff that I never bothered to empty out from when we moved TWO YEARS AGO! So I'm looking at things that I haven't seen in a very long time. On the plus side, I found a LOT of POst it notes.

Then I found some more Mathcounts stuff and Then I stumbled upon the Middle School Honor Band Festival. God, that was so long ago. I looked into it to see who all I recognized from either middle school or afterwards at UHS.

Some people of mention:
Elise was in it. She's seventh on the flute list. Aslo among the flautists is Lisa Mason.

Keli was first oboe.

Collin Mechler was second chair clarinet, and I was the lead (if that's any kind of actual title, I do not know) Third Clarinet. Jordan was a couple chairs behind me.

Greg Nix played Tenor Sax next to Colin Scott Fleming, unfortunately.

Mauney was first Bari Sax

Jesse Marshall and Erin Pyron played Trumpet (did Erin leave after Sophomore year or something?)

And Zach Raves played percussion.

It's just funny how none of us really knew each other back then, and my my how times have changed. Now the list as a whole is far from a who's-who of UHS people, but I just find it hard to believe that it was over four years ago, and yet barely four years ago, when we were practically complete starngers. Also, how come they wouldn't let us keep the sheet music?

new specs

I got new glasses yesterday. they're smaller, slightly more tinted, and made of titanium so my skin doesn't react. But now I feel like a hippie.

6.21.2005

brainstorm

Hey guys I was thinking about establishing a blog just for our dreams and whatnot. Would anybody be interseted in contributing and/or getting it off the ground? We could analyze and interpret and make full-hearted attempts at everyone else's dreams and, maybe in a way reminiscent of APCHAM or something try and figure out why we get them in the first place. Who's with me?

6.20.2005

kickass

Heard this online today, and I likes it. It's all up ons!! Find the video yourself; it's not that hard. It's by Ben Moody (the guy who left Evanescence) and Anastacia (prolly some pop singer). A mi me gusta mucho. El segundo verso es poco lame, pero por lo general la cancion es maravillosa!

"Everything Burns"

She sits in her corner
Singing herself to sleep
Wrapped in all of the promises
That no one seems to keep
She no longer cries to herself
No tears left to wash away
Just diaries of empty pages
Feelings gone astray
But she will sing

Til everything burns
While everyone screams
Burning their lies
Burning my dreams
All of this hate
And all of this pain
I'll burn it all down
As my anger reigns
Til everything burns

Walking through life unnoticed
Knowing that no one cares
Too consumed in their masquerade
No one sees her there
And still she sings

Til everything burns
While everyone screams
Burning their lies
Burning my dreams
All of this hate
And all of this pain
I'll burn it all down
As my anger reigns

Til everything burns
Everything burns
(Everything burns)
Everything burns
Watching it all fade away
(All fade away)
Everyone screams
Everyone screams
(Watching it all fade away)
Oooh, ooh
(While everyone screams)
Burning down lies
Burning my dreams
(All of this hate)
And all of this pain
I'll burn it all down
As my anger reigns
Til everything burns
(Everything burns)
Watching it all fade away
(Oooh, ooh)
(Everything burns)
Watching it all fade away

ONE TINY QUESTION:

ALice, is it possible to double major from two different colleges (IE Science and Engineering?) I thought I remembered them saying that you couldn't. HOwever, its been a long while since UA Science Day, so I can't recall, and my mom can't support nor refute my claim. What do you know??

Idunno, cuz I remembered that they had the whole Speech and Language Science curriculum. Also cuz of Math, or Physics, or something else.

6.18.2005

pathetic

So I'm stuck at my mom's work for the course of two hours. I have with me a book I've been telling myself to read for the past year and a pack of cards. Suddenly, I get a craving for something mathematical. So I devise a chi squared test to see if I had all the cards in my pack. Later I relalized that I failed two of the major assumptions:

That my sample size was less than 10% of the entire population, and
That it was a Simple Random Sample of the population (though I did shuffle really well, I tought)

Though I did make sure each expected cell count was _> 5

SO I shuffled really well and made 6 chi squaed tests of 4 groups, so df= 4-1 = 3, and the total number of each sample was 20 cards, based on the formula X^2 = E((o-e)^2/e) these were my actual results. They go in order H, D, C, S

[expected cell count is: 5 5 5 5]

1 6 2 11, X^2 = 12.4
8 0 8 4, X^2= 8.8
8 5 5 2, 3.8
6 6 5 3, 1.2
6 5 4 5 , 0.4
3 6 7 4, 2.0

Todd, I hope you're taking notes since this is practically ALL of chapter 12 right in front of you.

Though I haven't bothered to find the p values yet, though I'd suspect I may reject H0 on the first one @ a= .95

Whoops! I almost forgot:
H0= pi1= pi2= pi3 =pi4 = .25
HA: Ho is false

So then I went into wondering how likely it actually IS to get exactly 5 of each card, so I began experimenting with (quadronial?) expansion (a+b+c+d)^20, etc. As I went through sample sets without a calculator, I came upon something really cool, thogh it's probably been well documented and whatnot

YOU CAN DO A 3-D PASCAL'S TRAINGLE, and it works with the expansion of (a+b+c)^n, and the sum of all the coefficients is 3^n, as opposed to 2^n. So I started drawing it out, and it uses a 2-D Pascal's triangle as its sides and for the inner number you add the 3 numbers above it. I just think its's so cool. I wish I could draw one on the computer to show y'all, but you can draw it out by yourself.

Also, thanks to my handy dandy TI-89, I hope to actually find the probabnly of 5 of each card by doing (.25heart + .25 club + .25 spade + .25diammond) ^20 and finding the coeffcient with all 5 in it.

An interdisciplinary consideration of this contemporary problem, analysis, Post-Traumatic Shock, as well as conflict resolution procedures will be examined.

So, theoretically I'd only need an additional 14 classes (VectorCalc and Diff EQ are required for Mech Eng majors) to get ALL 4 MINORS! Let's see, 14 classes divided by 7 semesters (since I already registrede for the first one) = 2 classes additional per semester, which isn't incredibly strenuous, at least I don't think.

another weird dream

perhaps inspired by my degree claims, I had a freaky weird dream last night. It consisted of 3 parts:

1. So I'm at what I guess is the UofA, and they assign us all into different groups, probably of 12 or 16 people. The group I was in was doing something I had no input in, let alone no one would clue me in on what even the assignment was or what we were working on. I tried to ask, but they kept ignoring me. Somebody kept saying "Engineer" a lot.

2. Then I'm at some school that I associated as UHS (though it clearly wasn't) for some kind of class reunion party. Zach Raves' band was playing some set, but I headed over to the volleyball courts, and no one would let me in. The one time the volleyball landed by me off the court as I tried to hit it back it wound up going in reverse.

Now for the weird part.

2 (continued). SO I head back to where the music was playing and I spot this treehouse type of building. I head inside, and there's this GOth/Satanic-like shrine in the corner. I looked at it for like 2 seconds, but got disgusted by the images and all the redness. The room was maroon. Suddenly I hear what sounds like a young baby crying. I turn around, and I see Ms. Balzer reading a book. She looked upset the first time I saw her but then she looked fine after a double take. She showed me this book she was reading; it was about animals, and it was one of those dual sided books, you know, if you go to the back cover it's actually a different book. So the first side was about basic, common animals: cats, ducks, and I distinctively remember seeing a hamster picture. Then she flipped it around and it was about all of these rare, obscure, unknown animals that have no other name besides their scientific designation. Then the music from outside ends and one guy dressed in all black was apparently looking for me. He asked me to put my finger of the back of a suction cup that he was taking out of his pocket as he spoke. It looked clean and unmarked, so I did so. Then he squeezed my finger into it a little more for a fingerprint or something, and this other lady whom I hadn't noticed before started laughing. Afterwards I get out and start looking for a car.

3. I'm with my mom in some sort of parking garage. She says she doesn't feel well and wants me to go get her some McDonalds. So I get out an next thing I know I'm at some sort of fancy looking food court with a McDonalds at the far end. So I'm squeezing thorugh all these tables and stuff trying to get to Mockey D's and I notice A LOT of people from school, just all over sitting and chatting. Then I'm at a corner and I can't remember for the sake of me which way I was going or what direction I was coming from. So I make my way thorugh a bunch of tables when I see all the UHS alum and I realize that I'm back where I started at. SO I make my way AGAIN through the plethora of chairs and tables and make my way to the McDonalds. They have a little Chinese girl on the intercom, suposedly looking for her parents cause she sounded upset, that's my best guess at least cuz she was speaking in chinese. So at last I make it to the counter and the cashier guy is trying to deuce me into getting two drinks because of the super cool contest they had. But I said no and just ordered a chicken sandwich combo, but I can't recall if I was buying it for my mom or myself. The gu really wanted me to buy a 46 oz. drink.

So yeah, see what summer vacation does to me? I've already got cabin fever, no thanks to you people :!) Somebody, please make headway of this.

I think I has the solution

I shall graduate with honors with a major in Mechanical Engineering and QUADRUPLE MINOR in math, econ, psychology, and Spanish. There; it's that simple.

Now I will see this in the morning and wonder what was in that soda I drank.

Memory overload

So like I said a while ago, I need to clean my room. Mom is for some reason 100% confident that I'll need to take my bookcase to the UofA with me, and the only way to properly do that is to go through ALL the papers and keep only the REAL important ones. But I'm a packrat at heart. So as I was looking thorugh all the scrap papers I had, so many memories came flooding back. And it was weird. I was particularly fond of some of the things I still had from Mr. Colville's class: my vocab sentences, my Trojan Horse play, an essay/story about Noah and the Great Flood I titled "Ark! The Herald Angels sing!" among others.

I threw out finally 80% of my geometry notebook from Mr. Roberts' class as well as 90% of my Junior Spanish Notebook. Those ones felt good. Then I found a bunch of MathCounts worksheets and a complete chronology of my PreCalc/ Trig homework. The fact that I had it so well organized shows how much UHS changes a person, or maybe just life in general. I was such a good little student. What happened?

Then I found this one page that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. It was about 3-armed people playing softball, because if they played baseball they would hit their heads too much. I don't think I tossed it away, but I might've.

It's just so weird, like my bookcase was a time capsule of my academic history since I moved up here to Tucson. and now that I have one and a half garbage bags full of papers from that period, it just feels a little odd. Not empty, per se, but more like unfull.

I'm about half done with my bookcase now, and I still have to go through the area around my desk and my closet. Who knows what other long-lost goodies I will scrounge up? Only time will tell. BUt for the time being my room looks even worse then it did before since I have piles of books and old college brochures strewn about the carpet.

I forgot to mention that as I was cleaning I found the copy of HHG2G (or HG2TG or however you guys say it) that I bought at O' Hare on my way back from MIT. That day I read like 80, 90 pages, and now I'm almost finished with it. This will mark the first time I've read a non-school book from start to finish in quite a while, so it's a start. Is the movie still playing anywhere, and if so does it go beyond the first book so I'd have to invest in more literature?

And as for my continuing struggles of the college major, I've been looking into a major in Engineering mathematics w/ minors in Econ and Psychology. And I was freaking out about choosing between 4 colleges! NOw I have a much larger number of possibilities and it seems like they're all drops of water, interchanging and constantly moving between the surface and the bottom.

All of my APUSH historian articles are in the trash. !hallelujah! And check out the Foo FIghters' "Best of You" video if you get the chance. It's cool weird, like mega sensory overload. The balloons made me feel like crying. Cursed balloons. Now I've never liked balloons my entire life; I dread them more than I enjoy them cuz I'm always afraid that they're gonna pop for some reason and make that noise thta hurts my ears, so I try and avoid them whenever possible, but just seeing that whole group of them floating off, with no direction, with no way to fight, just each other... Crap I feel like watching the li'l brudder show now or just watching the sbemail that started it.

6.09.2005

arts and crafts nostalgia

We should definitely do this sometime, either now or once school starts up, cuz it looks like it would make somebody's day. I mean, if I saw one of these it would make mine!

6.08.2005

on second thought

Now double majoring in Physics and Astronomy doesn't seem like a half-bad idea.

But, of course, I'm a rather indecisive person, and if I could go to college for next to nothing for 20 more years I probably would.

Is triple minoring looked down upon?

pregunta de bailar

Hey, this is directed to anyone who can help me out w/ something. Apparently there is a new dancing game called IN The Groove slated for PS2 release in like the next week or two. My question is DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME???!!! It says that they have a machine at Golf N' Stuff, but I wouldn't know since I don't get out much. So my 1 major question is:

Is this worth the 40 bucks that it's been MSRP'ed, or is this just a rip off of DDR? Or is it an improvement? I heard a sample of the music on the official website, but it seems more than just a little canned for my taste. Am I just misinformed and this is the next best thing since sliced bread or is this a total waste of time?

I heard that it has these weird shit things you can do like make the arrows rotate or spin around or (can you believe it?) make the player hit 3 or all 4 steps at once. Would those really make a difference, or are they just cheap bonuses?

If you know, I'd like to know.

6.07.2005

And we were worried about the border patrol down here!

6.06.2005

The 1 2 Step

God I really need to work back up my DDR stamina. After 2 songs I was completely exhausted and drenching from the head down- surely not a sight for anyone's eyes. With about 8, 9 songs under my belt from yesterday, with most of them in Standard Mode (cuz, serioulsy, I'm not THAT good!) now my whole lower body ached this morning. I think all the songs ranged from like 5 feet to 7 feet: I did do one song on Heavy- Share My Love; I just like the little off steps cuz its's like do de-do do do do de-do.

But now I really have to clean my room. I started by putting most of my clothes on hangres, and after just that it looks reasonable tidier. But my desk is a hellzone, just cuz it has all my papers of my UHS history pretty much, so it's gonna take a while to go thorugh those. I should keep just the important papers, like tests or those Spanish assignments from freshman year when the temporary Senyora Caballero put little smiley stickers on EVERYTHING! But I get too freakin' attached to my stuff, and it's really unhealthy.

Maybe I should do a Psychology minor and figure out my own dreams and what they mean. Or could I get a History minor with my APUSH credit as a guide? But what would I do with a History Minor? It would be cool, but cool doesn't equal money in the long run, unless you're on a game show.

Ooh, the possibilities.

6.02.2005

academic suicide

How do I get myself into these things? So I finished my UofA orientation, and why do I torture myself so? I have 5 classes, 3 of them honors, and a lab. So it goes.

Mondays:
12-1250
Chem 105A-subgroup 001H (The fundamentals of chemistry) (The H indicates honors)
in Chem 134

1-150
Math 223 (Vector calc, and this was like the only one available for me)
ENGR 304

3-350
ENGR102- subgroup 007H (Introduction to Engineering)
PAS 201 (Physical and Atmospheric Sciences)

Tuesday:
8-915 AM
TRAD 102-046 (The Beginnings and Roots of Western Culture)
M LNG 350

930-1045 AM
English 109H-007
Educ 535

11-1150
Chem
now @ KOFFL 216

1-150
Math

Wednesday:
9-950
Engineering 102
now @ Comm 206
same chem as Monday
same Math as before

Th:same TRAD as Tuedsay
same English as Tuesday
Same Math
6-850 (PM!!!)
Chem 104A-049 (Chem Lab?)
KOFFL 521

Friday:
Same Engineering as Weds
Same Math

So at least I only have two classes on Friday, and don't start on Monday til noon. Sleep-ins make me happy.

But so now I've orientated, but I'm seriously think of just dropping my TRAD class, cuz as of now I have 17 credits pending, and I'm just not sure if I wanna go in full blast. I could hold off on calc, but the longer I wait the sooner I forget. Oh well, at least my housing is still up in the air. And I'm still up in the air about a minor, whether or not I should even think about it. The Aerospace Eng curriculum is very similar to the Mech Eng routine, so I could get a minor in Aero w/o too much addt'l work and look a little more well rounded.

I took a Language Placement Test on Tuesday, and it only took 10 minutes to determine that I was well efficient as Spanish (I could sign up for Spanish 253, which is like 5th semester language or something). So I don't have to take ANY language classes to fufill the general requirements for graduation. That's good, but placement is not the same as credit, and if I don't get a 5 on the Spanish AP then I'm in trouble about continuing with Spanish as a possible minor. And Astromony and Econ are still in contention.

But now its pary time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Alice, I'm sorry I forgot to give you your graduation card.

I spent most of the UofA time with Zach Raves and Sean Whitsitt. We had a lot of fun playing pool for Free and Eating Panda Express for next to nothing (My meal cost 49 cents!) It was pretty cool overall; I just hated all the walking, but I better get used to that might soon, especially since the dorm I put at the top of my list is SOUTH of campus. And Arabic is the new Chinese.
