quite a day

So, a lot has happened in the world today:

The Pope may or may not be on his final days, again
Terry Schiavo, the lady in Florida, died
I gave my mom diabetes; the doc says that stress was the catalyst
And I won the state math test... again

Now I already had a deep psychological talk about this with Alice, but my score went down. For me, this pisses me off. My problem is I focus on the bad while I should be relevating that I won the state math contest, beit for a second time. Last year they were gonna give away a cash reward or something, but I was ineligible since I wasn't a senior. Ah phooey! And this year I have no idea. I should talk with Eich about this. It would be an incentive to stay here if there actually is money this year, but it mostly comes down to the sticker price after rebates.

Decisions, decisions. The end is near, however you want to interpret that.

And why was Miranda barefoot in my dream????? The only thing I can make of it is that since she also got into MIT (though she admitted she was already leaning toward Caltech) it is an indication of the future and of good things to come. The UHS I was walking around was all dark and gloomy (very gray/ black with few lights), and the construction area-like zone was all cold and metallic. I could see where her footprints removed the dust from the galvanized stairs.

Of the quarters in my dream, the first one was Texas. Does that mean Rice? I shrugged it off to look for what else I had. Then it was maybe a Carolina, though I can't well remember. The next three were all Wisconsin, each with the special third husk or something. All the coins were bottom side up.

Who takes AP psych? Would they be able to help me? Or is the M,A S,E analysis squad sufficient?

what not to say during easter

(Note: some basic Spanish is required)

So, on the news they showed the Pope trying to make a speech during today's services. However, due to his recent surgery his vocal chords took a beating and he can't really talk. His voice is all deep and raspy. Mom noted that he sounded a bit like Darth Vader.

Now I should think about what I say before I say it. I've got a bad reaction time like that. But the next thing that came out of my mouth was,

"Luke, I am your papa."

Inappropriate, yes
Outright funny, yes!

how do I get myself into these things?

So next week is spring break, which means that next sunday is easter sunday which means that the previous sunday, today, is plam sunday. So I say in a passive manner to my mom, "Hey! Today's palm sunday, and we haven't been to church in a long time" (this is true, the last actual mass I believe we went to was the beginning of junior year, and before I went off for Cornell to visit in October we stopped by to take a generous portion of holy water*.) I had no inclination of actually going; I was just stating the obvious.

But then mom, realiznig that I'm probably gonna go out of state, says in a rather sudden matter. "You're right, we should go to church." So we did.

Now I went to Catholic school for 80% of my elemntary days (not fourth grade, long story) and achieved a basic rememberance of the church stuff. I remembered most of my prayers, phrases, and even when to sit down and kneel and get back up (granted, the rest of the congregation was doing it too so it kinda helped me remmeber) but it felt a little weird. I can't describe it. How can something I once believed in so fervently seem flawed now? The chant during the first readings was "Oh God my God why have you forsaken me?" and I know that's what Jesus said when he was on the cross and that jazz cuz I saw Passion of th Christ last year along with every other MExican family in Tucson, but why should we be asking this if we know that he is there. All I'm saying is why question him blahbitty blah in a group, and as a chant? HIstorical merit? Idunno, but it seemed awkward for me.

So is it, in religious terms, have I just lost my way by this confounded stuff we call science (kinda like Rocky in Ceremony [not the italian one]) or is religion just a whole big pile of hooey for people with hope and optimism and stuff like that?

* They had a FOUNTAIN of holy water near the main entrance. Were I still little, I'd think it'd be great that everyone could have more blessed water. As a teenager, I go WTF?! Doesn't that make it diluted?

A little like 2 months and 2 weeks ago: I wrote

Gray says MIT would be idiots to not accept me. The question is am I idiot enough to turn them down should I get in?

The question still stands. MIT aren't idiots.

So I saw a large envelope in the mail. Was it MIT? Yes, it was.

I don't have a money summary yet since I need to give them a CCS profile. BUt as far as I know, you can only do that online, and it costs money to tell them you have no real money, but we don't even have a credit card. Seriously. So what do I do?

As much as I wish money weren't a factor, it is, and a pretty hefty one at that. I've gotta figure out the pros and the cons for all of them, and some of them are more obvious than others.

So I got accepted into all 4 colleges I fully applied to, hence the title. In a way it would've been nice to've been rejected by one or two or three, just to easen the deciding process. I have like 6 weeks left. This is gonna be painful.

3.14.2005

still waiting

GAH!

no word from MIT. This can only mean one of three things:
1) They only began sending out rejection letters today
2) Only the rejections were sent early and the acceptees are to come
3) They never got my application

Also, it is time for another episode of "So I saw a large envelope in the mail. Was it MIT? No. It was..."

So I saw a large envelope in the mail. Was it MIT? No. It was the car insurance bill. Why it's that big, I don't know.

Brent Morgan didn't get in, though, and that kinda sucks for many reasons. It might've been cruel that I made him open his mailbox, first. Idunno. Apparently p= 1450/11000, which is something like .13, I believe. Let's see what the calculator says:

randomInt(1,100)

Yay! I got rejected three times!

Patience may be a virtue, but patience is why I cannot become a doctor. (Alice, pleeease tell me you get this! cuz brent didn't.)

half of my conscience

My nana is so funny. She's been trying to act as the family's voice of reason for me to not go anywhere far for college.

Example)

When ASU said they'd be willing to give me 12K if I applied there (I hadn't even applied!) she asked me if that would be too far to drive to and from everyday.

Example)

Yesterday she saw that Cruz guy on the news. The conversation went something like this:
Nana; What did that guy do?
Me: Oh, he shot a police officer.
Nana: Oh that's bad. Where, in Texas?
Me: No, here.
Nana: Here in Tucson?!
Me: YEs, nana, this happens all over.
Nana: Ah. But it happens A LOT MORE in Texas. (Where Rice is, btw)
Me: That was only El Paso.
Nana: BUt that happens everywhere.
Me: Exactly, including Tucson.
Nana: Exactly, there are dangerous people everywhere, so wouldn't you rather just stay here where you have family?
Me: (leaving the room)

I mean, yes I'm Hispanic, and the idea of me going off all by myself is foereign to her. After all, she's used to close knit families that go far beyond the nuclear. I mean, we try and call her relatives in Mexico at least once a month that she hasn't seen or even met in a long time. She hears about the dozens of grandkids and grandcousins that she'll never see. The idea of me branching off to who knows where just seems strange and very unfamilylike. But I dunno, my view of this is naturally biased. She also thinks that me staying at a dorm here would be too far away.

I love my nana, don't get me wrong, but it feels very constricting, that's all.

It hit me that I've been cursing a lot more than I used to, and it's becoming habit. Now it's not to the point of being chronic.... yet, but I should nip this bud before it gets out of hand. I realized this as I went to get the mail. A large envelope was in te box. Was it MIT? No. It's Saint Louis U, saying there's still time for me to apply. WTF I say at a moderate level, then thinking that there could've been people around me, and most of the people who are at the mail around 4 30 are older and so I shouldn't even think a bad word or they'll label me as a good for nothing teenage punk.

TO ALL COLLEGES WHO ARE STILL TRYING TO RECRUIT ME: STOP! NOT ALL HISPANICS ARE SO LAZY THAT THEY'LL CONSIDER COLLEGES THIS LATE IN THE GAME. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

Got a hiarcut today. I think it looks horrible. It's so much shorter, now. My head feels naked. But Mom's happy, so I guess it was worth it. Maybe.

About Friday night, I don't know what it was, but it felt so good. I went to the Intermediate show for Drama, feeling uncertain about lots of stuff as I usually do. During intermission, I stepped out, bought a Starburst, and looked up. It was an overcast night, but one star was popping out. I prayed like Jiminy Cricket told me to do. Then it started to rain, and I like it when it rains. But everyone else was freaking out, so they tried to get everyone in and start the second half ASAP. And it was cute and funny and worth two and a half bucks. After the show, I felt good, but still overwhelmed with my thoughts as usual. Last year I blogged about a ghost following me home. This time there were three: two guys and a cat. Maybe it was the cat that Mr. Colville said lived under the portables, I dunno. Then it started to rain again. It felt really good. I trodded home as slowly as I could so the feeling could last as long as possible. But before I knew it I was at my front door and I had to go inside; I told Nana I would be home before nine, and it was 8:57. God I never want to forget that. It just felt so right.

Because happiness is only on the tagline of credit card commercials

It might be priceless, but it's sure as hell gonna cost you an arm and a leg to get there.

Rice wants me to go visit mid April for "Owl Weekend" which would theoretically help me decide if I wanted to go there. Me being stupid as I occasionally can be, I thought it would occur during Spring Break. But noooooooooooooo. Jesus has to come back from hell at the end of March! j/k if anyone's religious out there.

And it's really nice since Rice is willing to reimburse some travel expenses. But that's the crap with rebates: you need more money than it costs to start with. Like the computers and appliance stores always talk about "Instant rebates" which bring the Final price down, but that's only good if you're able to pay the original price. I mean I know I'm taking econ, but wudn't the company want as many people to buy it from the get go? It doesn't make sense to me, that's all.

Additional costs for the rest of the year, maybe:

APs: 300
Prom: 50+, though I might I might go stag if I even go at all. I already talked this with Elise, but after going all out last year, this year I don't wanna spend any money I don't have to. Now don't get me wrong, it was awesome the whole evening, but money is like a dagger that goes right through my heart.
Rice: 400+ for expenses and souvenirs and transportation
Plus however much I normally cost:

Feeling like a piece of utter crap as mom sleeps on the futon on the living room floor again while you get to party or do interesting stuff: 750++
